Ireland is just as rainy as its reputation implies. I’ve been here for three days now (if you count one very jet-lagged and sleepy travel day), and every day, it’s rained. People joke that if you spend one day in Ireland, you can see all four seasons in just 24 hours, and they are right. If it’s rainy April at 7 am, it’s sunny June at 9. The weather being as moody as I am is something I will have to get used to.
I live in student housing called Corrib Village, which is on the west side of the River Corrib. I have a clear view of the river from my bedroom window, and there are usually little babies and dogs playing by its bank. My room is small, but I don’t have to share it, which is nice. I have three flatmates, and they are all from the states. Two of them are from Villanova and they study civil engineering, and one is from Arcadia University and studies global business or something like that.
I’m having trouble sleeping through the night. I think I’m still jetlagged because I wake up at 5am every night and can’t get back to sleep. On top of that, I’ve been having the craziest dreams. Last night I had a dream I was eating lunch off a tray in a cafeteria and the girl next to me said something that made me mad, so I picked up my tray and started beating her up with it. Then I ran away because I thought I would get expelled from school. The night before that, I dreamt that I woke up and my whole room was full of food. Fresh bread lined the shelves, dry-aging meat hung from the ceiling, and my closet turned into a spice cabinet. I think I need to stop falling asleep hungry.
Tomorrow, I think my roommates and I will go to the street market in town, which I am excited about. Until then, I have to try to sleep through the night.
